Reflection on Certificate In People-Helping Skills

Hi everyone, Jessica Ng here (:

Today, about 12 of us attended this course called
"Certificate in People-Helping Skills". I learnt a lot from this course from understanding ourselves to understanding and conseling others. I have never thought that conseling others needs such a high level of communication skills and understanding towards others in order to make the conseling process successful. Skills needed for communicating with rebellion student is by finding the internal problem that lies deep within, and not just the outer problem that you see. For example, a boy was caught vandalizing the school property.Though we cannot compromise and must report it to the teachers, we can still find the root of the problem by understanding him. Like we can talk to him after school personally and ask him what is the problem that he is facing now. As we all know, rebellion student do things for a reason, most likely is to look out for attention that they have searching for to feel secured. But however our questioning of the problem cannot be too straightforward too, we must try to be understanding towards the issue and listened to the entire problem before our conselling process begins. Conseling process is actually a process by which we help not by giving suggestions to the counselee, but however help them see the situation in a different angle thus finding the most appropriate solution for the problem.

And, i think that's it, though there is a lot a lot of things we learnt, its hard to write all the stuffs down ! HAHA :D

-Jessica Ng-
Hello,
Liyana here !

Today, I'm going to do my reflection on the course ; Certificate In People-Helping Skills.

Everyone has their own uniqueness, we should solve the problem step by step so that it won't get bigger. We as students can be a mediator as we may understand them as we are as the same age as them. They might feel that at least someone understands them and they are not the only one that is having that kind of problem. We should let them solve the problem themselves and think of their own solution as sometimes the solution we give them is not what they want to hear and at the end of it they would blame us back. We should identify the problem and what was the previous attempt of trying to solve the problems and intervention. The principle of Behavioural Approach. ABC ; Antecedents,Behaviour,Consequences. There was this activity where the instructor asked us to throw the marker, just throw but not to catch. but our immediate reaction was to catch the marker. We are used to it .Empathetic responding is to 'feel with' a person. we should try to understand what the person is going through. Empathetic responding requires understand the fact, recognising feelings, reflection of understood facts and recognized feelings back to the person. We should speak only after listening. It's rude to interrupt. we should also speak with sensitivity. choose words that might not hurt the person so that it shows that we respect them and we should speak with assertiveness. we should be firm so that they would consider our advice.

well,till here (:

Thank You ^ ^

30 hour famine camp

"I'm hungry " " BUT THEY ARE STARVING !!!"
Hey councillors , Samuel Joo here :D Here to share a few things about the 30 hour famine camp :D To the sec3s who went for this , congratz to you guys for completing it :D Hmmm how should I start xD This was a fun camp , even though we were not together as a council , but we shared our experience and make new friends xD Even though we fasted for 30 hours , our stomachs grumbling very often , we did it for them , for the young children and families in other country , to give them a better life . I'm sure those who went to Cambodia would understand ,would have seen the condition of their country . This camp also given us opportunities to experience the life of children over there , what they do for a living . Activities like searching 50 small red beans from a big big bag of damped newspaper . It's really not easy , what's more is that it's in the dark , no lights . Fasting for 30 hours gives miie the opportunity to experience how the children felt when they have no food to eat , no even a single cent to buy food , imgine us , fasting for 30 hours already die liao , cannot tahan , over there , they might not have food for days . During the 30 hours , what i did most to forget about the hunger , is laughing . I met this guy , his name was Jun Hao , he was shorter then me and i thought he was sec 3 , but he was sec 4 , we would laugh about the slightest thing that happened , even at out facilitator , HAHAHA !! Still got alot to write , but guess I'll stop here :) To the sec 2s , this is one camp worth going for :)
I MISS CAMBODIA ! HAHA anyone wan go ?? HAHA !!                                                                                                                                 -SAMUEL JOO x)
